Bike to Work Day looks to promote safer streets for cyclists

By HUB SmartCoverage Team on May 28th, 2018

Monday was Toronto’s Bike to Work Day, and many cyclists took it as an opportunity to stress the need for safer conditions on the road, even going as far as staging a “die-in” in Nathan Philips Square. Hundreds of cyclists spanning all ages took over Yonge Street, making their way to city hall Monday morning. The ride kicked of a month-long celebration in the city, celebrating cycling in Toronto until the end of June.

Leading the pack of cyclists was none other than Toronto mayor, John Tory himself. The mayor addressed the riders in Nathan Phillips Square, and spoke about the new additions to the city’s bike network. He also gave a warning to all drivers to take extra caution while driving as the number of cyclists in the city increases.

So far 18 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed in Toronto in 2018. The latest being Douglas Crosbie on May 16th, while he was riding to work in the city’s east end. Even while the event was happening a rider was struck and injured on the Danforth.

Road safety if a responsibility for everyone, and drivers must take extra care to help ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists alike. From all of us here at SmartCoverage, stay safe out there, and enjoy Bike Month!
